Three Postcards
These are concept sketches for my three promotional mailers. The vague theme they share is either senses or "see no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil". They make zero sense, and can be thought of as surreal visual puzzles ... maybe?
UPDATE: These are no longer going to be used, I've chosen to focus on more portrait driven mailers. Stay tuned. 9 April 2009

O.K. I feel like some of your best work has been close ups(The portrait stuff). You like to zoom in when you do your finished pieces, and that works great on already zoomed in pieces, like the portraits. So I feel like you should zoom in on these pieces to create new compositions and detail the shit out of them. The top one, zoom in on the kettle. The next one maybe the skull kiss. The bottom one should just be the head with flowers sticking out of the mouth. That one would be my favorite.
That could be a good idea, except that by doing this the open narrative would be removed! I want the ideas to remain. The attention to detail you've mentioned is important. Perhaps I'll detail the shit out of some areas and leave others flatter more stylized as a compromise.
I'm loving the concept of the first one- Make the liquid evil practically glow in the final piece.
Alright Mr. Honesty, here I go!
The first and third concepts I feel are much stronger than the second right now. There's something very original about both of them and something less inspired about the second one- What if that's a real head in her hands?? seen as how they're all skeletons, it would make sense wouldn't it? You're reversing half the roles in this and leaving the other half as is. I love the contrast of the beauty of roses and the violent, brutality you have in the third one. I love the sense of whimsy in the first. good concept sketches. I'm glad you're doing illustrations, keep doin 'em!
by the way, congrats on the society of illustrators! that's gonna be a good backing for ya.
